What are Meta Tags and how do I use them?

Meta tags are a piece of html code that tells the search engines what your webpage is about. Every single page on your site should include a description tag and a title tag. If you understand html code, you might already know that the Meta Tags go right in the <head> section of the page.

As an example, this page's title tag looks like this: <title>What are Meta Tags and How do I use them?</title>

The description tag looks like this:

<meta name="description" content="Learn how to use meta tags and keywords on your website.">.

You can use a keyword tag although most search engine no longer pay any attention to it. Spammers used to abuse it.

So why is all of this important? Well, you know when you do a search on Google or Yahoo and the results show all of those different pages? What you see is a title and a description for each result. Whatever you set your Meta Tag to be is typically what the search engines will display in the results.
